Cell Phones

We understand that in the high tech society in which we live, students have cell phones.  We have and will continue to discourage students from bringing them to school; however, our policy does allow students to possess cell phones.  It should be noted that cell phones may not be used during the school day.  The school day begins the moment a student arrives to school and ends at the dismissal bell.  If parents feel it necessary for their child to have a cell phone at school, we ask that it be kept in a safe place (pocket or backpack) and turned off.  For 7th/8th grade students during PE, phones should be locked in a locker.  The Oakley Union Elementary School District reserves the right to search any cell phone brought to school and used anytime during the school day in violation of District Policy 5131, “Possession/Use of Cellular Phone and other Mobile Communication Devices.” Inappropriate verbal or text messages, pictures or other material found on the phone may be grounds for disciplinary action.  “Inappropriate verbal or text messages, pictures or other materials” includes but is not limited to harassing statements or any communication that creates a hostile environment based on race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, or disability; discriminatory statements; sexual statements or pictures; and messages to organize activities that may cause harm to any student, involve drugs and/or alcohol, or that spreads false information about any other student or employee of the school district.”  If a cell phone is seen, used, or heard during the school day it will be considered a violation of our cell phone policy.  Our cell phone policy consists of the following:

  • 1st Violation: 1 35-minute lunch detention - Phone confiscated until the end of the day and then may be picked up by the student after school.
  • 2nd Violation: 1 week of 35-minute lunch detentions - Phone confiscated until the end of the day/parent notified and then phone may be picked up by the parent.
  • 3rd Violation: Friday School - Phone confiscated until the end of the day and picked by parent.
  • 4th Violation: student issued a Friday-School and 1 week of 35-minute lunch detentions.  Parent must pick up phone and sign acknowledgement that further violations may result in-school or off campus suspension for defiance and place on the NO ACT List.
